The Netherlands and China have a lot to offer to each other. We are strengthening
our ties in many fields, ranging from economic to political and cultural cooperation.
My visit reflects this. China is important to us. Within the European Union, the Netherlands
is China’s second largest trading partner, and worldwide the Netherlands is its eighth
biggest investment partner. In the fields of water, agriculture, high tech and creative
industries in particular, I see a lot of opportunities to do business and to share expertise.
We also work together in the political arena, for example in protecting important trade
routes from piracy in the Gulf of Aden. The Netherlands is hosting the Nuclear Security
Summit next year and we hope China will play an important role. And of course for a
relationship to improve even further, we also need to promote closer ties between our
people. This is why we are broadening our cultural exchange initiatives. Next year we
will be bringing an impressive Van Gogh exhibition to China along with our leading
institutions in the field of music and dance. To sum up, we are expanding and
deepening our relationship at the same time.
